Why does ChatGPT say the wrong things about my company?
Old training data, contradictory sources, or a name shared with someone else. How to tell which, and how to correct it.

Short answer: ChatGPT repeats what its sources say, and your sources disagree or are out of date. The fix is almost never to argue with the chatbot. It is to correct the listings, profiles and pages it learned from, and make your own site the clearest, most current statement of the facts.
There are three usual causes. The model was trained before something changed: a new address, a dropped service, a rebrand. Your details are inconsistent across the web, so the model blends them. Or your name is shared with another business or person, and the model has merged the two.
Each has a different fix, so the first job is working out which one you have.
At a glance
Outdated training data
The model's built-in knowledge stops at a cut-off date. Anything that changed since is only picked up when it searches the web.
Contradictory sources
Different addresses, founding years or service lists across directories and profiles get averaged into an answer that matches none of them.
Name confusion
A business sharing its name with another company, product or person can have facts from both merged into one answer.
Nothing to go on
With too little information, a model may fill gaps with plausible-sounding guesses. Thin coverage invites invention.
Work out which problem you have
Ask ChatGPT about your business with search on, then ask it again in a way that relies on its built-in knowledge. If the searched answer is right and the other is wrong, the issue is old training data, and time plus good current sources will fix most of it.
If both are wrong in the same way, look at where the error could have come from. Search your business name plus the wrong detail. Very often it appears on an old directory listing, a stale social profile, a previous address on a map service, or an article from years ago.
If the answer contains facts about a different business (a location you never had, a product someone else sells), you have a name-confusion problem that needs the business made unambiguous, not just corrected.
Fix the sources, not the chatbot
Correcting ChatGPT in a conversation does not change what it tells anyone else. The durable fix is at the source. Start with the records engines weight most: your Google Business Profile, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, LinkedIn, the main industry directories, and any Wikipedia or Wikidata entry if one exists.
Make the name, address, phone number, services, founding date and leadership identical across all of them and across your own site. Remove or update listings you no longer control. Where a third-party article is wrong, ask for a correction; most publishers will fix a factual error.
On your own site, give the facts a clear home: an about page that states who you are, where you operate, what you offer and what you do not, in plain sentences, plus Organization structured data that says the same thing. When sources disagree, a clear, consistent, current first-party statement gives the engines something to resolve against.
When the problem is name confusion
If another business shares your name, the engines need distinguishing details every time you are mentioned: your city, your category, your founder's name, your domain. Use them consistently in your own descriptions and profiles, and link your official profiles to each other so they form one connected identity rather than several loose ones.
Structured data helps here more than almost anywhere else, because it lets you state explicitly which profiles belong to you. It will not settle the matter alone — third-party sources still count — but it removes ambiguity on the one site you fully control.
Can you report it to OpenAI?
ChatGPT has feedback controls on each response, and OpenAI provides channels for privacy and personal-data requests. Feedback on a single answer is useful to them but is not a correction service, and it will not reliably change what other users see.
Treat reporting as a supplement to fixing the sources, not a substitute. The same corrections also improve what Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews say, because they draw on many of the same records.

Why does ChatGPT say the wrong things about my company?: common questions
Can I make ChatGPT delete wrong information about my business?
Not directly. ChatGPT does not keep an editable record for each business; it generates answers from training data and from pages it searches. Correct the source listings and pages the wrong detail comes from, and make your own site the clearest current statement of the facts. Answers based on live search improve once those sources are recrawled.
Once we fix our listings, when does ChatGPT stop repeating the old details?
Answers that use live search can reflect corrections within weeks, once the corrected pages are recrawled. Answers from the model's built-in knowledge change only when a newer model is trained on newer data, which can take much longer. Current, consistent sources are what search-based answers draw on in the meantime.
Why does ChatGPT confuse my business with another one?
Usually because the names are similar and there is not enough distinguishing information attached to either. Use consistent identifying details everywhere you are described (city, category, founder, website) and link your official profiles together, including in structured data on your site, so engines can tell the two apart.
Does this affect other AI assistants too?
Yes. Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google's AI Overviews draw on many of the same sources: business profiles, directories, review sites and your own website. Wrong or contradictory details in those sources tend to surface in several assistants at once, and correcting them improves all of them.
