What is AI SEO? A plain-English answer
Two meanings travel under one label. One is worth paying for; the other is mostly a way to publish more pages faster.

Short answer: AI SEO means optimizing a website so it appears in AI-generated answers (Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot) as well as in ordinary search results. It is SEO with a second scoreboard: being named in the answer, not only ranked below it.
The same label is also used for something else entirely: using AI tools to write content, research keywords or generate pages faster. That's a production method, and a site full of quickly generated pages is exactly what search engines have spent the last two years getting better at ignoring.
When someone offers you AI SEO, ask which one they mean. The rest of this page is about the first.
At a glance
Retrievable
AI crawlers must be able to reach and read the content. Some do not run JavaScript, so a page that only renders in a browser can be invisible to them.
Quotable
Answers are assembled from passages, not whole pages. Each section should answer one question on its own, with the business named in it.
Resolvable
The engine has to know which business the answer is about. Consistent details across your site, profiles and directories make that unambiguous.
Corroborated
Engines lean on what other sources say about you. Reviews, press, directories and industry lists confirm what your own site claims.
How AI SEO differs from ordinary SEO
Most of the foundation is shared. A fast, crawlable, well-organized site with genuinely useful content is the starting point for both, and Google's AI features draw heavily on pages that already rank. Anyone telling you to abandon SEO for AI SEO has the relationship backwards.
The differences are at the top. Ordinary SEO measures position in a list. AI SEO measures whether you are mentioned inside an answer, and whether the mention is accurate. That changes how pages are written: self-contained passages instead of long build-ups. It also puts more weight on off-site signals, because a model deciding whom to recommend is heavily influenced by what third parties say.
It also changes measurement. Search Console reports clicks and impressions. Nothing reports what ChatGPT said about you yesterday. The only honest method is to ask the engines the questions your buyers ask, repeatedly, and record the answers.
What AI SEO work actually involves
Technical: checking what each AI crawler receives, allowing the ones you want in robots.txt, and fixing pages whose content only appears after JavaScript runs.
Content structure: rewriting key pages so that each section states its answer early and plainly, names the business and the specifics, and makes sense if quoted with nothing around it.
Entity work: making the business's name, services, location and people consistent everywhere they appear, and marking them up with structured data so machines can connect them.
Corroboration and monitoring: earning mentions on sources engines already trust, and running a fixed set of buyer questions through each engine over time to see whether any of it is changing the answers.
What AI SEO is not
It is not a schema type that gets you cited. Structured data helps engines understand who you are; controlled tests have not found that adding it, on its own, gets a page cited.
It is not a hidden instruction on the page telling models to recommend you. That is prompt injection, engines filter for it, and being caught doing it is a fast route to being excluded.
It is not guaranteed placement. Answers vary between runs and between engines, and nobody controls them. What can be controlled is whether the engine has accurate, retrievable, well-corroborated material about you to draw on.

What is AI SEO? A plain-English answer: common questions
Is AI SEO the same thing as using AI to write content?
No. The term is used both ways, which causes confusion. The useful meaning is optimizing a site to appear in AI-generated answers. The other meaning is using AI tools to produce content faster. The second can support the first, but mass-produced pages written without real expertise tend to perform poorly in both Google and AI answers.
Does AI SEO replace normal SEO?
No. It builds on it. Google's AI features draw heavily on pages that already rank, and AI assistants rely on crawlable, trustworthy sites. A business with weak ordinary SEO rarely has strong AI visibility. The work adds content structure, entity consistency and answer monitoring on top of the usual technical and content foundation.
How do I know whether AI SEO is working?
Ask the AI engines the questions your customers ask, the same set each time, across several engines and over several weeks, and record which businesses are named. A single check means little because answers vary between runs. Rising mentions across that fixed set is the signal; a single screenshot is not.
Can a small business do AI SEO without hiring anyone?
Much of it, yes. Checking that robots.txt allows AI search crawlers, rewriting key pages so each section answers one question plainly, making business details identical across your website and profiles, and asking customers for genuine reviews all cost time rather than money. The parts that usually need specialist help are rendering problems, structured data across a large site, and measuring answers consistently over time.
