How do I get my website into Google's AI Overviews?

What Google says it requires, which is less than most advice suggests, and what separates the pages it cites from the pages it merely reads.

Short answer: Google says there is no special markup or submission for AI Overviews. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet in ordinary search — after that, being cited comes down to the same things as ranking well, plus writing passages that answer the question directly enough to be quoted.

That makes the first check simple: if a page is not indexed, or uses a nosnippet setting, it cannot appear. Most pages that fail to get cited are eligible, though. They are just not the clearest answer Google retrieved.

Below: what Google publishes about eligibility, what the cited pages tend to have in common, and what to stop spending money on.

At a glance

Eligibility is ordinary SEO

Indexed, crawlable and allowed to show a snippet. Google's documentation on AI features says no extra requirements apply.

Answer early

The passage that gets cited usually states the answer in its first sentence or two. Long build-ups before the point are hard to quote.

Cover the follow-ups

Google expands a query into related sub-questions when building an Overview. Pages that answer those neighbouring questions give it more to use.

Snippet controls cut both ways

nosnippet and max-snippet limit how much Google can show from a page, in Overviews as well as normal results. Restrictive settings can rule you out.

What Google actually says

Google Search Central's guidance on AI features is short: the same fundamentals apply as for search generally, there are no additional technical requirements, and a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown with a snippet. There is no AI Overview schema, no opt-in and no separate submission.

That is worth taking at face value, because it rules out most of what is sold as AI Overview optimization. If someone offers a special markup or a submission service, they are offering something Google says does not exist.

Google also documents the controls: nosnippet, data-nosnippet on specific elements and max-snippet all apply to AI features. They are useful for keeping a particular passage out of answers, and harmful if left on a page you want quoted.

What cited pages tend to have in common

They answer the question in the first lines of the relevant section, in plain language, without needing the paragraphs before them for context. That is the passage an Overview can lift.

They are specific. A page that gives the actual steps, the actual numbers or the actual conditions beats one that talks around the subject. Vague pages get read and not cited.

They cover the neighbouring questions. When Google builds an Overview it expands the search into related sub-queries and retrieves pages for each. A page that also answers the obvious follow-up questions (the cost, the timeline, the exception) has more chances to be selected.

They are already trusted. Pages that rank well for the query, on sites with a record in the subject, are cited far more often than new pages on unknown sites. There is no route into Overviews that skips building that trust.

How to check where you stand

List the questions your buyers search, then search each one and note whether an Overview appears and which sites it cites. That tells you which searches have an Overview to win, and whose pages you are competing with.

Search Console includes AI Overview appearances in its ordinary performance data but does not break them out separately, so you cannot filter to them. Your own recorded checks, repeated over time, are the practical measure. Watch for impressions rising while clicks stay flat on informational pages — that pattern often means you are being shown or read in an answer without being visited.

What not to spend money on

Special schema for AI Overviews: Google says none exists. Structured data is still worth doing properly for rich results and for helping Google understand your business, but it is not an Overview switch.

Rewriting every page into question-and-answer format: useful on pages that genuinely answer questions, damaging on pages that rank for something else. Do not change the title or H1 of a page that already ranks just to chase an Overview.

Mass-produced pages for every possible question: Google's spam policies treat scaled low-value content as spam whether a person or a tool wrote it, and it tends to pull down the rest of the site.

Frequently asked

How do I get my website into Google's AI Overviews?: common questions

Is there special schema markup for Google AI Overviews?

No. Google's documentation says no additional markup or technical requirements apply to AI Overviews. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to appear with a snippet. Standard structured data is still useful for rich results and for describing your business, but it does not get you into Overviews.

Can I stop Google using my content in AI Overviews?

Yes, with snippet controls. nosnippet on a page, or data-nosnippet on specific elements, keeps that text out of AI Overviews as well as out of normal search snippets. The trade-off is that it also limits how your page appears in ordinary results, so apply it narrowly.

Why is my page ranking but not cited in the AI Overview?

Ranking gets a page retrieved; it does not guarantee it is quoted. Overviews tend to cite the passage that answers the question most directly and specifically. Check whether your page states the answer in the first lines of the relevant section, covers the obvious follow-up questions, and makes sense if one paragraph is read on its own.

Do AI Overviews show up in Google Search Console?

Their impressions and clicks are counted inside the normal Search Console performance data, but Google does not provide a separate AI Overview report or filter. To know whether a specific page is being cited, you have to check the searches yourself and record what appears.
