What is local SEO? A plain-English answer

Google names three ranking factors for local search. Only two of them are things you can actually work on.

Short answer: local SEO is search optimization aimed at people looking for something nearby, a plumber, a dentist, a bathroom renovation company, rather than information or a product that ships anywhere. It covers your Google Business Profile, the local pages on your own website, and the signals that tell Google where you are and whether you're worth showing first.

Google names three factors on its own "Tips to improve your local ranking" support page: relevance, distance and prominence. Distance is mostly out of your hands; Google estimates it from wherever the searcher is standing. Relevance and prominence are not, and most of what local SEO work actually does is push on those two.

It overlaps with regular SEO. It isn't a rebrand of it. A national ecommerce page and a local plumber's page can both be technically sound and well written, and only one of them needs a service area, a verified profile, and a business name that matches its storefront sign exactly.

At a glance

Relevance, distance, prominence: not traffic or backlinks

Google's own ranking guidance names three inputs, and none of them is a generic authority score. Relevance is how well your listing and site match the search. Prominence covers reviews, ratings and how often other sites mention you. Distance is decided by the searcher's location, not by anything you do.

It runs on two systems at once

The map pack draws from your Google Business Profile. The organic results below it draw from your website. A business can dominate one and be invisible in the other. Osoba Renos ranks on page one for "basement renovation Mississauga" in the organic results because the website has a page built for that exact search, not because of the profile alone.

Consistency is the unglamorous part

Your name, address and phone number need to match, character for character, across your website, your profile and every directory that lists you. A suite number written two different ways is a mismatch Google can read as two different businesses.

AI assistants complicate the picture further

Google's own AI Overviews can pull from your Business Profile inside Google's ecosystem. ChatGPT, Perplexity and Copilot mostly can't — they read the open web, so a business that only exists as a profile has nothing for them to find.

The three ranking factors, in Google's own words

Google publishes this directly on its "Tips to improve your local ranking" support page: relevance, distance and prominence decide which businesses show up for a local search. Relevance means your Business Profile and website actually describe what the searcher typed: the right category, the right services listed, the right city named.

Prominence is the one most people underestimate. Google ties it to how well-known a business is offline as well as on: reviews and ratings, but also links, news mentions and directory listings elsewhere on the web. A business with fifty five-star reviews and no mentions anywhere else is less prominent than the ranking factor rewards.

Distance you cannot optimize. Google works out roughly where the searcher is and favours whoever's closer, all else equal. The only lever local SEO gives you here is a service-area setting that's honest about where you actually work.

What the work actually involves

In practice, local SEO is a handful of concrete jobs, not one technique. Claiming and fully completing a Google Business Profile: category, hours, services, photos, service area or address. Building website pages for each city-and-service combination a real customer searches, rather than one generic "our services" page. Getting listed, with identical details, on the directories that matter for the industry.

Reviews sit inside this too, because they feed the prominence factor directly. The durable way to grow them is to ask real customers after the job is done, never to filter who gets asked or offer anything in return. Google's content policy treats both as manipulation, and the fix is usually removing the reviews or the profile.

None of it is a one-time setup. A city page written once and never touched competes against pages that get updated, linked to and mentioned elsewhere for years.

Local SEO isn't the same query as "local SEO Toronto"

This page covers the discipline itself. If the question is specifically about ranking a Toronto business, the local competitive set, the GTA's overlapping service areas, what a Toronto agency actually does, that's a different, more specific question with its own answer.

The distinction matters because the fixes are the same everywhere, but the competitive bar and the exact map-pack behaviour vary a lot by market. What beats three competitors in a small town needs a lot more prominence signal in a market the size of the GTA.

Where AI search changes the local picture

Google, ChatGPT, Perplexity and Gemini don't draw from the same local data, and they don't agree. Measurements of how often each assistant recommends the same local businesses for identical prompts show real divergence between them: Google's own local results lean toward a repeated, familiar set of brands, while the assistants outside Google's ecosystem pull from whatever they can find on the open web.

That's the practical reason a website still matters even for a business that lives or dies by the map pack. The profile is Google's own local system. Every AI assistant that isn't Google has to find you some other way.

Frequently asked

What is local SEO? A plain-English answer: common questions

Does local SEO only apply to businesses with a physical storefront?

No. Google's guidelines cover both: a storefront gets a fixed address and signage requirement, while a business that travels to customers, like a plumber or a mobile groomer, gets a service-area profile instead, with the address hidden and a defined radius shown rather than a pin on a building.

What actually counts as a "local" search?

Any search with location intent, whether or not the words "near me" appear. "Plumber" typed from a phone reads as local because Google can see where the phone is. "Plumber in Etobicoke" is explicitly local. "How to fix a running toilet" usually isn't, because it's informational rather than a request to hire someone.

Can local SEO help with AI search too, or only Google?

It helps both, but not equally. A complete, consistent profile is read by Google's own AI Overviews. It generally isn't read by ChatGPT, Perplexity or Copilot, which crawl the open web the way search engines always have, so the website side of local SEO carries more of that weight than the profile does.

Is local SEO worth it for a business that only serves one neighbourhood?

Yes, arguably more so. Hyper-local relevance is exactly what Google's relevance factor rewards, and a business serving one neighbourhood faces less competition for prominence than one trying to cover an entire metro area.
